In 2006, Marshall University's Center for Business and Economic Research completed an Economic Impact Study for the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority. Research gathered for the study and its results collected in 2005, reflect the impact on the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System's project area and Southern West Virginia.
